about

Established in 2004, Variant Field is a collaboration between Amani Friend (of Desert Dwellers) & Alex DeYoung, both proficient electronic music producers with over 40 years of combined studio experience. Their music is influenced by psychedelic breaks, IDM, hip hop, dub, downtempo, ambient, and classical traditions; blending many sources of inspiration into abstract and cerebral soundscapes that are equally suitable for both the body and the mind. The intelligent and textured productions of Variant Field pulse with hypnotic-punchy beats, earth shaking bass grooves, and blissful cinematic expansions and melodies, telling a story with each track that takes the listener on a journey of emotions and experiences, like the soundtrack of a film.

After two original eps released on Desert Trax, Variant Field’s third offering was a track called Fields of Variance, and was featured on Guadi's compilation Everlasting on Iboga Records (Denmark). Soon after that was released, Desert Trax brought forth a set of remixes of this track including reinterpretations from Desert Dwellers and many others. Variant Field has also had singles featured on releases by Merkaba Records (Austraia) and Interchill Records (Canada), and has provided remixes for Desert Dwellers on Twisted Records (UK) and Buddha Bass on Soulfood.
